Global Warming in Canada: What Landmarks Could Look Like in 2124
Methodology
The list of 645 Canadian landmarks was gathered by searching for the most “photographed”, “beautiful” and “instagrammable” landmarks in each province.
For each landmark, three of the most commonly used hashtags were used to calculate the overall number of hashtags. For example, to calculate the overall number of hashtags for Algonquin Provincial Park, we used the following hashtags – #algonquinprovincialpark (83,543), #algonquinpark (266,640) and #algonquinparkcanada (4,485), resulting in the overall number of hashtags being the sum of these numbers (354,668).
For Quebec landmarks, we also took into account the French names, for example, the overall hashtags for Old Montreal, include the following hashtags – #oldmontreal (391,739), #vieuxmontreal (221,952) and #vieuxmontréal (20,570).
Caution was taken to differentiate between landmarks that share the same name by specifying the location (either the city or the state) in the hashtag – for example, Vancouver’s “Queen Elizabeth Park” could be mixed with one with the same name in Wellington, New Zealand. We also took this into account when calculating hashtags for interprovincial and international landmarks, such as the Bay of Fundy or Niagara Falls. For example, when calculating the number of hashtags for Niagara Falls, only hashtags specifying “Ontario” or “Canada” were used.
